Dear Third Graders,
In Writing Workshop, we’ve been practicing putting dialogue into our personal narratives to make them seem more vivid and real. Your assignment here is to write at lease five sentences that include dialogue. This can be a conversation that has happened in your life, or one that you make up. (See the notes and writing samples you’ve taken down in your writing notebook.)
Please make sure that you have proper punctuation and you have written at least five sentences. Also, remember to make a new paragraph when a new person is speaking.
I’m looking forward to reading your dialogue! These should be finished by Friday at the end of class.
My mom and I walked into the grocery store and I immediately spotted my friend Matt. I waited until he noticed me too, and then I smiled and said, “Hi, Matt!”
ReplyDeleteHe said, “Hi, Shannon!” He then began to laugh.
I asked Matt, “What are you doing here without a parent or your brother?”
“My mom sent me back up front for a lemon, she’s in the flour aisle,” he replied.
“Oh. Well, tomorrow should be a fun day at school!”
“I know, I love field day! I’ll see you then, I need to get back to my mom.”
I waved goodbye and said, “Okay, bye Matt!”
“Joshua, wake up, we have to get you to camp soon,” my mom said in a soft voice.
ReplyDeleteI sat up out of my bed and began to rub my eyes. I looked at my mom and asked, “How long will I be at camp?”
Mom looked a little sad and took her time to answer. She then said, “You’ll be at camp for a little over one month.”
I gave my mom a hug and said, “This month will fly by, and you can come visit. I love it when you and dad come and see what I’ve learned at camp.”
“You’re going to have a blast son. I’m looking forward to your first letter. Now go brush your teeth.”
Dialogue in storytelling is something I work on in September with my students. I will be looking to see that they're not over using "said" and that it reads like a story. This would be a good assignment for me to gauge who still needs more support, because at this point, they would have practiced a lot.
